Where does my tax go?
Enter your pay to see what you would pay in income tax and National Insurance, and how government spending is divided. It is an illustration, not a receipt.
Read this as an illustration, not a receipt. Tax goes into one pot, not into separate pockets. VAT, council tax and other taxes you pay are not counted here. And the government spends more than it collects: about 11p in every £1 it spends is borrowed.
How we worked this out
2025-26 rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland: personal allowance £12,570 (reduced above £100,000); income tax 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above; National Insurance 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Scotland has different income tax bands and is not included. It assumes one job, employee National Insurance and no pension contributions or other income. Spending shares come from the Treasury’s 2025-26 figures for total managed expenditure of £1,360bn. Check current rates at GOV.UK.
